Hi, I am trying to set up a simple module to display all products in a category "New Products". Simply cannot get this to work. Have checked forum replies, and read this tutorial:

all to no avail.
A number of issues I find very confusing: why I can't select the category "New Products" in a module, how the module is supposed to connect to menu items and / or HikaShop display modules.
Are there a series of clear step by step instructions anywhere to create a simple module that will display all the products in a given category anywhere? I've tried the tutorial above, and this doesn't display anything.

There is a published module set up for the right column that should be showing the same products, just cannot get it working.

OK so I have the module working, I just can't change the the 'Associated category' setting. I can select the category "New Products", but as soon as I hit save it reverts back to "product category". Any ideas?

Hi,
Thanks to enable the Joomla debug mode and set the error reporting level to "Maximum".
This should display an error message which can help us to understand the issue.
Are you sure that your category tree is not broken ? Could you try to rebuild it by clicking on the "rebuild" button in the toolbar ?

I rebuilt the category tree, but still was not able to set "New Products" as the category for the module.
No error messages were displayed, I've pasted the database queries below, does this help at all?

Hi,
Looking at the debug data, it just seem that you didn't select another category in the category selection popup.
Can you make sure that you click on the + icon of the "use" column of the categories listing in the popup ? Normally, it should close the popup automatically and refresh the associated category with the one you just selected and then when you click save it will be saved in the database.

The associated category is definitely set to "New Products" before I click the save button, but afterward it has reverted to "Product Category". Is it maybe a javascript issue? I've attached two screen shots just to be certain we are talking about the same field.

I know this would be an awful hack, but just to get me out of a spot is there anywhere I can update this value directly in the database?

Then you should have the same problem with any of the settings of the module, not just this one.
Do you have the problem with other options ?
This would indicate either a server configuration issue, or a user session glitch.
Please first try with another browser, maybe it will help.
Otherwise, change the same option in the configuration and create a new module. It should directly have the category from the main configuration.

Thanks for your help. I tried it in IE (have been using Chrome) and got the same error. I also tried changing the setting for "Display add to cart button" to inherit, and this worked fine. Can you just elaborate on what you mean by "change the same option in the configuration and create a new module. It should directly have the category from the main configuration", I'm not clear on how to do that.

You have to set the desired category in Configuration > Display > Modules main default options, option "Associated category".
This way, when creating a new module, it will get the selected category in the main configuration by default.
