Characteristic variants are repeating themselves

What's causing this? I had created a product with two characteristics. Color and size. When I add 2 new values to the "sizes" characteristic, I go back to my original product and delete the current "sizes" characteristic because even though I added two new values and they show up in the backend of the product, when I click on manage variants this is what I get. As you can see the product variants are repeating themselves and show 4 or 5 times or more and on the front end, if I was to click on a color and size that is no longer in the backend variants, it will show no stock.
I can't seem to get this to work correctly. As long as I never add a new value to a characteristic, it works fine, but If I add more values to the characteristic, this is how it displays.
I've had to delete the characteristic and recreate a new one so it will work. I don't want to have to create a whole new set of characteristics everytime I need to add another value.

So if I understand, right now, after creating a characteristic and applying it to a product, I can't change that characteristic (such as adding some new values to the characteristic) and have them show up on that particular product? Is that right?
