custom fields not showing up

Hi,
I just set up a custom field - it's supposed to provide a place for users to input author info when adding a book to the store in the backend. I would then like that author info to show up in the front end.

Added the custom field, set it up as a text field to show up in the "Main" category where I have a test product.
When I go to products listing in backend, I see an "author" column, but nothing in the admin area to add the info when I add or edit a product.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong, I've searched this form and the doc's but can't find a fix
