any downside to not specifying image sizes?

-- Joomla version -- : 3.3.6

in the System -> Config -> Main -> Images settings, is there any downside to leaving the various image size fields blank?
e.g. Thumbnail width/height
Product page image width/height
Image width/height

I imagine switching on "Force images size" on with no sizes would lead to interesting results/errors, but if the other fields are blank, would the template simply resize as needed? it seems to, just wondered if there was any issues if the size fields are left blank.

Hi,

If the fields are left blank so it will not generate thumbnails and use the main image anywhere.
So no issues, you can simply apply css properties on the different classes to resize it as desired.

Only to continue what Xavier said, in case the implications of not generating/using thumbnails aren't clear:

The main images will be used = loaded everywhere, e.g. also in product listings. Depending on their file sizes, your pageload times may go up astronomically.

Example: If your main image is lots of pixels and 2MB in size for proper display in the popup on the product page, without thumbnails it will load these images also in product listings, where you might want only say 180x120px or so. Imagine 20 products in a listing... it would take ages to load all those images, even though they appear very small. Thumbnails as per your values in the configuration are only few kB.

Similar, even if maybe not as dramatic, for images on the product page ("before" popup), unless you wanted them to take the whole page width or so.

Thanks to both of you for your answers.

yes, I wasn't planning on having giant images being resized everywhere, was just curious.
in the end I have set thumbnail size and product image size but have left the main image sizes blank but will use suitably sized images for the zoom / popup images.

thanks again!
