Loading time with large numbers variants

I have rebuilt my products products (meals) with a large number of variants (three characteristics per variant) which results in 467 variants (including three images per variant) per meal product. Previously I had 171 variants per meal product.

467 variants is taking a long time to load atm: approx 40 seconds before the product page is fully resolved. Anyone have any suggestions on how to try speed it up?
