display of "custom items" on category page

I have a site i'm developing using Hikashop. this site used to be in virtuemart, but we're finding the new virtuemart difficult to build shops with. Here is our issue:

We have "custom fields" for an item that display on the product page. This works perfectly on product pages:

However, on the category page, the display is not good:
chicagostarproductions.com/j30/additiona.../14-ice-competitions

What we would like is if there is a way to have the category page work similar to when a product has characteristics. If a product has characteristics, then on the category page there is a button for the product that says "choose options". this is how we would like this product to behave, when a user goes to the category page, the "custom fields" would not display, instead just a button for "choose options" would display and that would like the user to the product page.

I figured it out!!!

for anyone else trying to do this, the option is in the menu item for the shop under "parameters for products". choose "no" for display custom fields. this will not show the custom fields on the category page, but will still show them on the product page.
