Product List by Category

I've spent hours trying to do what I thought would be simple: creating a page showing all our products with a dropdown near the top providing the user with a list of all the product CATEGORIES from which to select that subset of products based on the category chosen.

I've read the tutorials and have read many forum messages. I get the sense that what I am asking for cannot be done based on that, but it doesn't make sense.

I hope I am missing something. Please help to put me in the right direction.

Thank you!

Hi,

I see no problem in doing that.
And it should be quite easy.
I'll suppose that you've just installed HikaShop.
There are only two steps in doing that:
1. If you unselected the "products listing menu item" choice during the install wizard, you need to go in the Joomla menu manager, and move the "products listing" menu item in the HikaShop default menus to your main menu so that you can have a link to a listing of all the products of your shop from your main menu. If you had left selected the "products listing menu item" during the install wizard, you already have such menu item configured.
2. You need to go in the menu Display>Filters, click on the "new" button there, set the "apply on" option to "categories" and save.
That will display automatically a filter dropdown at the top of the products listings on your website with the list of categories in it so that you can filter the products below based on the category selected in the dropdown.

As you can see, it should be easy to do. Now there are at least 2 reasons this might require extra steps:
- if you've turned off the "show filters" setting of your menu item, you'll have to activate it back
- if you've deleted the products listing menu item, or that you don't have it because you're using a template starter pack with HikaShop preinstalled without the "products listing" menu item, you'll have to recreate such menu item and configure its settings to display all the products in it via the Joomla menu manager.

Hi Nicolas,

Thank you for your assistance.

Yes, it is true that I just installed Hikashop. I am using it with the RocketTheme Interstellar template.

I have moved the Hikashop "products listing" menu item in the HikaShop default menus to my main menu

I added "Product:Category" beneath the "Root", then I added several "sub categories" beneath "Product:Category". I have added about 50 products and assigned each to one ore more of my "sub categories". They all show up in the product listing with the information and photo as they should..

I created a Hikashop filter I named "Select Category". It's a single dropdown, Category = "product category"; Including sub categories="yes". It is publishes, submit on click - "yes", Deletable filter and dynamic display="no". Options / Apply on "Category".

My menu item type = "Products Listing" using "Inherit (div)". "Product features display", "Filters" = "Yes". "Main category" = "product category". "Sub element filter" = "All sub elements" and I have tried every combination I could think of. I do not see the "show filters" setting you refer to. Maybe that's the problem.

As it is now the filter dropdown appears at the top of the page"products listing", but the only option is "all". Below that is the page/display control, the all the products.

What have I missed?

Hi,

The problem is with the settings of your filter. Remove the category that you selected in the category option of the filter.
Please make sure that you set the category setting on the right and leave empty the category setting on the left:
take.ms/SzINN
I've just tested it on my end and it works fine.
