different product pages for different user levels

I would like to have product page show differently for each user group. For example, I want to have a guest could see some custom fields but not other custom fields and a registered user could see different and more custom fields. I know how to modify the template for the product page. I do not know how give access to a different product page template (for the same product) to different user groups. If I use custom fields it seems like I have to have all of the custom field visible to only one user group. Can I have three custom fields visible to one user group and a different three custom fields visible to another user group?

Thanks for the directions. I had been trying to assign the acl in the product page not the custom item page.
