(Display and sorting) articles with scientific names

Hi there,

i am currently setting up a catalog for a small local shop related to marine aquaristics. In this regard, i wonder if there is a way to display either the scientific name or the common name of corals and invertebrates and sort them correspondingly on behalf of the reader's preference. As the only entity that would have to be "translated" is the article name, i think grown translation suites are a bit overkill for an endeavour like this, apart from the problem of having to translate complete pages which leads to massive redundance in this case.

Let's go into further details of my "problems", to make a bit clearer what i am talking about. In the world of aquaristics (well, basically anything dealing with animals or plants), there are two kinds of people: those who are used to the common names of certain beings in their used native language and those who are more fond of their scientific names, because they are more specific and allow better international communication (just imagine me speaking of a "Schwertpflanze" while you know of several species of the corresponding genus "Echinodorus").

Then there is the shopkeeper who has to decide on how to name his products. Does he better decide on the common name or the scientific one? Or a combination à la "Common name (scientific name)" in order to make both searchable? Or the other way round? Either way one has to mess up with one of the two kinds of people mentioned above.

Any ideas? Did i miss something? I must admit that i am still pretty fresh in both Joomla and Hikashop and that i am not sure on how to search on this problem appropriately.

Sorry for any inconvenience and many thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

Regarding the search on the products, whether you have one field with both names of two fields, it won't change anything. The system will be able to search the same way in them.
Regarding the sorting, if you want to allow the customer to sort based on the scientific name or the common name, you would need two fields. In that case, you can use the product name for the common name, and create a custom field of the table "product" via the menu Display>Custom fields for the scientifique name.
You can then create a filter via the menu Display>Fields applying on "sort" with both the product_name and the custom field selected so that the customer will be able to choose between both for the sorting of the listings.
