Hi,
I am trying to find a way to show multiple color options for my product in a drop down selection. I tried variants but being that I already have a variant option if I add more it would be like a 100 variants.

Example of what I need:

Please Select Length:
75 inches
77 inches
80 inches
90 inches

Please Select Color
Red
Blue
Green
Purples

How can I do this without each color being an individual drop down per color or variants being too many?

Note: I also tried making a product called colors and put it in a category called product options. I created also a characteristics with several colors. I then added the characteristics to a main published products under options and added the two colors. It does show up like I want it on the product page, however, it keeps saying color not available even though I have it as unlimited.

I did find that if I put a price to the Option Colors that it works but unfortunately it adds cost to the color but I want the color to be free. If I put 0 for price then it does not save it. Trying to find a not extra cost to customer method for choosing a color in addition to the current variants.

Thanks,
Charles

Hi,

I think you're on the right track. Options are a good idea.
Note that if the "Display add to cart button for free products" setting of the HikaShop configuration is turned off, then the system won't allow you to add free products to the cart, and that includes products used as options.
I think that's why the system didn't let you do it. So please check that setting:

An alternative is to create a custom field of the table "item" via the menu Display>Custom fields:

I have another question:
Is there a way to have the image of the option show when selected? I have seen it work for variants but it is not showing for the options I set up.
Thanks,
Charles

Hi,

Having the image change based on what is selected is only possible with characteristics.

Note that you can combine characteristics and options.
You could have the color selector as a characteristic, to be able to change the image based on the selected color, and have the size selector as an option to be able to change the price based on the selected size.

Is there a way to have two different independent characteristic drop down selections so that one characteristic does not add to the first characteristic? Currently if I add more characteristics from my first one I get like 100 variants instead of like 12.

Example:

Characteristic dropdown A:
Select Length:
length 10"
length 11"
length 12"

Characteristic dropdown B:
Select Color:
Red
Blue
Green

Instead of them being combined.

Hi,

No, you can't have that.
Even if you had that, you would not be able to vary the image based on characteristic B, since, for this to happen, you need to configure different images for the different variants.

But why is it a problem to have a hundred variant ?
Note that you can add the variants in two steps:
- you add characteristic A to the product
- you add the variants for characteristic A
- you configure each variant
- you add characteristic B to the product
- you duplicate the variants for the other values of characteristic B
That way, you don't necessarily have to configure all the 100 variants if only characteristic A requires different configuration for each variant.
