Image size and display in product page

Under System | Configuration |Images I have the image sizes as er the attached image. Unfortunately, they do not seem to behave as I'm expecting.

The main display images are correctly sized, but the thumbnails are too small, as is the pop up image (the images with the scribbling on it is sized at 800 x 605 - hence the odd size in the parameters). Am I expecting this to act in a way it's not designed to?

Thank you. What do the dimensions on "Image" relate to then? Not the pop up image I'm guessing?

The "Product page image width/height" option, are related to the main product image and not the thumbnails.
